Natlys was founded in the spring of 2024 by me, Nathalie Ryling. I have a bachelor's degree in Lighting Design, and am also trained as a Visual Merchandiser. How people interact with and perceive their surroundings has always fascinated me. Through a creative exploration of the interplay between light, color and form, I give vent to this fascination. Having the ability to change and improve places is for me an incredible privilege.
I am based in Malmö, but have also done projects in other cities. Our new digital reality makes it possible to work on projects remotely. I am happy to help regardless of geographical location.
Why did I found Natlys?
For me, it is just as important to dare to ask for help with the lighting, as with, for example, interior design, plumbing and electricity. Many agree that good lighting is important. LED has opened up opportunities for us to freely create different lighting environments, but it is not always easy to understand how to use the light in the best way. The reason I founded Natlys was because I want to help people with lighting, with the aim of making them feel comfortable in the places they stay.
Natly's vision is therefore - to use light as a tool to create spaces where people feel comfortable.

Why is lighting planning important?
"Good light is not noticeable" - it may sound ungrateful, but there is something in it. We react more to details that stand out and that don't feel good, than the other way around. Therefore, the light needs to be so well planned that it is not noticeable. Light is essential for a number of different reasons and we need to take many aspects into consideration when planning light.
For example:
Visibility: simply so we can see our surroundings
Synergonomy: the light should be pleasant for our eyes, i.e. not disturbing or glaring
Health: both daylight and artificial light affect both our body and our hormones, but also emotions and psyche - which is important to take into account when lighting
Understanding the room: the light should highlight the room for us to understand the design of the room, what is there, where to look, to illuminate important elements, and for colors and shapes to be highlighted and harmonize with each other
User-friendliness: The light needs to be adapted to the type of activities carried out in the room and which people are there
Accessibility: the light and how it is operated needs to be easy to understand and logical to use
Aesthetically pleasing: although the light is essential, the design and aesthetic expression of the luminaire is also an important factor to consider.
Lighting is complex, and with that in mind, it's no wonder that many people need help with lighting planning.  Here you will find what type of help I offer.
My background
My journey started at IKEA, where I first heard about visual merchandising. Thanks to that, I got to know the importance of good lighting. Deepening my knowledge in lighting design was therefore a natural way to go.
I have for example worked with sales and recycling, where I had to work very creatively with creating new environments from what was available for the day. I have also worked at a Swedish luminaire manufacturer, where I gained a lot of experience in talking about lights and luminaires with customers. It was rewarding to work with that kind of counseling and to have the opportunity to help people.
During the last year I have also worked with artistic light installations. It is another way of being creative, but based on completely different aspects and goals than normal lighting planning. Take a look under the PROJECTS tab to read a little of what I have done.
I am also a board member of Sydljus - a non-profit organization with a focus on spreading knowledge and inspiration about light.
When I'm not analyzing light, I'm usually in my tufting corner, at a flea market or on my yoga mat.
